Do you ever get nice treatment because people assume you are from the same country as them?

Okay, funny thing.

I just arrived at one of the temples to celebrate the Chinese New Year, they examined people, out of two guys 1 questioned where I am from, but another one told him to let me in.

I just came inside, with the army and monks and my Georgian and Irani friends were not allowed to come from this entrance 🤣🤣

I think they allowed me here because I speak Chinese and they were confused whether I am part Chinese or not and didn’t want to discriminate, hehe cute.

Waiting for my friends to arrive, they were sent to another entrance for the detailed examination 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Okay, these people are very nice, they let me in a restaurant while it’s not open yet. The owner came to wish me Happy New Year personally.

I get that a lot being half-Japanese where sometimes people treat me very kindly until they realize I'm not full Japanese. Then some people start to distance themselves from me when they realize it. Other people move closer and get fascinated like, "Please teach me English!" It tends to be divisive when people find out that I'm "hafu" as they call it here.

The majority are very nice when they realize I'm not full Japanese but I still get a few here and there, especially in more rural parts of Japan, who seem to get confused and weirded out by it.

I am actually from here in Japan though, born and raised in Shizuoka. But my mother is American (white). So I am half-white. And I also lived in the US for quite some time.

When I was in Mexico on vacation with family and we were at a restaurant and I said "gracias" to the server, be sat on the table and with the biggest smile, he was like "You are Mexicano?" He definitely got all excited that I might have been the same race as him. That was when I was around 11 I think.

And then when I tell Trinidadian people that I'm Trini, they always seem more receptive to me.

It’s kind of default to treat people nicely because it’s profitable. Although there legal ways of discriminating here. But it’s not allowed when servicing the public. The law is pretty complicated.
