I’ve never spent a night alone, but recently had to spend two nights by myself. My parents went to an out of town wedding and I said, “I’m old enough to be alone for two nights”! Of course, my neighbors kept an eye on me (thank God!) because I ended up spending my second night at their place! It was tough 😞 Are any of you afraid to be home alone?

+1 yMy very first experience of being on my own wasn't at home, I was 9 years old. It was a massive Scouts day out to these huge playing fields, next door to a prison.
The Bus/ Coach which was supposed to pick us up and drive us home never materialised. People were being taken home in cars and minibuses. I got left there on my own in the pitch black. No lights, except for in the distance. It must have been 10 clock at night when I was finally picked up.
My Dad was working and my Mum couldn't drive, so she was constantly on the phone trying to find out what had happened to me. The Scout Leaders thought I must be with one of the other families, but I was just forgotten about.
To say I was terrified was an understatement. I had to sleep with the light on for months afterwards. I suppose if that happened today someone would have been prosecuted for it, but back then, meh!

That’s the most insane story I’ve ever heard! You’re right, if that happened today, there would be hell to pay! Lol Nowadays, if kids are dropped off at home an hour late by school buses, it’s a “Dateline NBC” special and people demand someone lose their job and thrown in jail!
- +1 y
It wouldn't have been so bad had they had mobile phones back then, because my Dad, being a London Taxi Driver, would have been able to pick me up before it even got dark.

Thank you for selecting my answer as a MHO

m +1 yThe last house I lived in was a couple hundred years old, you would hear the house setting at night, doors that were not hung just right would slowly close or open, the central heating was new but going through old wooden and brick areas resulted in some odd sounds.
my security Lighting would come on for random reasons, usually foxes etc,I have two cats and these would also add to the character of living there.
it could get a bit eerie lol

My God! I would have died of a heart attack!

Our house is on the bigger side, so I would constantly hear noises coming from all different areas. It freaked me out!
- +1 y
@suziessunshine yeah that’s the nature of houses, they creak and make noises, more so with bad weather, high winds.
Also like my current house, was rural and next to woods, which have owls etc lol - +1 y
Hearing a hooting owl would have landed me in a loony bin! 🤣🤣🤣

@suziessunshine Barn Owl

That is horrifying! That sounds like someone screaming.
- +1 y
You learn something new on here everyday. I always thought it was a “barred” own but people called it a “barn” owl by mistake! Turns out, they’re two different owls.
- +1 y
Barred OWL not own!
- +1 y
@Wallythewalrus2 LOL I never knew there was a barred owl! I just knew of a barn owl.

+1 yI'm the oldest of 3 my parents went away for a weekend was scared also but I think having my younger brother and sister home somehow made it less scary. My next door neighbor was looking out for us we had their phone number. If I was alone I too would have been more scared. I'm 18 now and pretty much outgrew the fear of being alone and I'm sure you will too!! I'm glad your neighbors let you stay with them the second night.

It’s funny you say that, because I wondered if it would be less scary if I had a friend over or if we would have been terrified together 🤣 but yes, having people with you would probably help. My neighbors are awesome people!
- +1 y
Yeah, even though my brother and sister are younger than me, it still made me feel less scared. You're neighbors are awesome!!
- +1 y
Thanks for MHO!!
+1 yI'm an adult and still get scared being alone at night in my own house. I have to set the alarms, the lights are on, double check the windows to make sure they are in fact locked. Some people grow out of it, but its still something I am working through.

I do too but not so much at night. Lol I’m sure I’ll slowly outgrow the fear.
- +1 y
likely. you learn to cherish your alone time when older
+1 yI was scared at your age too. I recently lived alone, when I moved out of state, for over a year. I would have moments when I heard noises in the middle of the night that scared me but it got better. You’ll be fine!
12 Reply- +1 y
Aww.. Thank you! Hopefully I’ll never have to live alone though. Did you move for a job?
- +1 y
Yes, it was.
+1 yYou are not alone. I'm also scared sometimes, especially after watching a movie/documentary about burglary or something. There are a couple of times I go back and forth to see if the door or windows are really locked.

I always make that mistake too! A lot of times I’ll put YouTube stories on and every once in awhile, a scary ghost story comes on. I like it! But I hate it! 🤣🤣
- +1 y
Haha! That's so cute. 😆😁 Just always make sure you lock the doors and windows and you're safe from ghosts.. 👻 Take care always.

Lol… it was tough! It doesn’t help that our house is kind of big, so there were a lot of strange sound coming from all different areas. 🤣

Thank you! Lol
+1 yI actually prefer being alone. When my wife and daughters are home, all they do is pick on me! I also think they might be trying to kill me, I just haven’t proven it yet!
11 Reply- +1 y
🤣🤣🤣 Poor guy! My dad only has my mom and I to pick on him, I have two older brothers that are moved out, so when I was growing up, it was my mom and I getting harassed! Lol
+1 ySometimes I am a bit shaken by the thought of a home intruder. I live alone in a somewhat spacious house but I do have a full size nine millimeter handgun and a loaded 30 30 within arms reach of my bed.
12 Reply- +1 y
I think that’s what had me scared, our house is a good sized home and makes weird noises, that I never noticed before, that come from all different areas! If it was a smaller home, it probably wouldn’t have been as scary!
- +1 y
Not much noise near me except animals about.
3.8K opinions shared on Family & Friends topic. I have slept in my house alone a few times. I do not get scared but I really notice every little noise.

Yeah, that’s what was scary for me, I heard creeks and cracking noises from all different areas. At times it was almost like I could hear voices.
417 opinions shared on Family & Friends topic. no, but I am older and am a really good shot and am really good at taking care of myself.
I can understand when you are young it can be a bit unnerving to be alone.
Turn on some lights and have the tv on, double check the door and windows.
That might help out a bit.
It will get better with time.00 Reply- 2.2K opinions shared on Family & Friends topic.

+1 yNo, not at all. Being alone doesn't bother me in the least, and you probably outgrow it. :)

You made it through one night, right?
- +1 y
I figured most men wouldn’t be, I guess it was more towards younger people. Probably mostly girls.
- +1 y
I think you are right. :)
- +1 y
Yeah, I was by myself for one night. The second night I asked our neighbors if I stay with them.
- +1 y
That's perfectly normal for a girl to do that.
No, because I know how to take care of myself. If anyone were to break in, it would be their bad luck, their rotten day, because I'd clobber them!
00 Reply585 opinions shared on Family & Friends topic. I absolutely loved being home alone as a teenager. Having the whole house to myself, nothing was better than that. I still love it but it's just not the same since I'm older
