I have never been so devastated after a loss as that of my cat. I’ve lost grandparents, a stepfather, friends, and they all hurt and I grieved them, but my cat was devastating. I had him from when he was 8 weeks to when he was 15 years old. His last few months were spent with me struggling to help him as his kidneys failed. Even knowing how sick he was, I wasn’t ready to let him go. I cry for him more than any other loss I’ve experienced because of how deep that connection was. I know the right decision was made for his life, I had spent weeks worrying if I would wake up and find him already gone, and I held him in my arms in those last moments. That was nearly 3 years ago. I never held on to grief for this long over a lost human family member. It’s hard to say why it was so much harder to cope with, it just was. But yes, pets are family and sometimes they leave a greater impact than our human blood relatives.

Yes. Our pets are family members. We treat them like children. We love them and care about their health and happiness.

I got my dog after my marriage ended. She was a rescue and maybe we both were so she's a lot more than just a pet
