Is it strange that my boyfriend told me he doesn’t have to mention about his rent (read for more details ) ?

My boyfriend and I been together for 14years. We are in our early 30s. We live in San Francisco where everything is expensive especially rent. We have talk to moving in together but we both have to save up money for that to happen.
I live at someone apartment and they rent me a room. He still live with his family and I assume he pays rent. Not sure how much cuz he seems to be private about it. ( never asked )

today we was talking about how he has a lot of bills to pay and that’s he hasn’t been working consistently ( works in construction) . I told him that something always comes up and that is why he never saves money. Then he said that he pays rent and I told him all of a sudden you pay rent and he got bothered. I told him how he likes to argue and throw it at my face how he has “ credit card , car insurance and other bills to pay “ but he never mention rent. He told him how he doesn’t have to and that he pays 700 but he is responsible and that why he doesn’t have to tell him. I told him all of a sudden you pay the same amount of rent but always argue with me about other bills but never hear you say I need to pay rent. He got so defensive and made it seem like mentioning it is bad. Is it strange he mentions other bills but not rent? The reason why this topic was brought up is because I’m already at a point where I’m fed up that is always a money situation and never seems to be ready to move in with me.
