When I was 5 years old, my mother and I had first joined my dad in Canada where he was doing graduate studies in university and using his TA salary to support the family while my mother did odd jobs that paid very little, having no job experience in Canada and no professional willing to hire her in the category she did her Chinese degree in since she did not have connections yet, and we were poor, but I believe we were very happy.
My dad later got a job in his field of study, and my mom got a job in her field of study, and our financial situation got better, but I do not believe our happiness increased.
I would say, I was happiest between the ages of 6-7, and that was when our family was poorest.
Research says working class kids are happier than rich kids when they are young, and I believe it is because poor parents are more humble than rich parents. Their academic abilities are also identical in those beginning years.
As they get older, rich kids begin to do better than poor kids in school and they begin to look better as well and later they become more popular and win more respect and get better jobs and dates then poor ones as well.

Can you really choose to be rich? I'm not rich, but i'm not currently hurting financially, and i'll tell you some of the happiest times in my life was when i was broke. Would i be happy if i was broke now? No. I think it has more to do with the ignorance of youth. So much of your life lies before you, So many possibilities, so few paths uncharted. As you get older your course seems more set. You're not going to be a rockstar, you're not going to be a professional athlete. It's even highly unlikely you'll become the next Mr. BEAST.
So i think the key to happiness is staying in the moment as much as you can. Something that is typically at odds with being a functioning adult as adulting is rife with responsibilities.
I always thought happiness was about saving enough to retire, retiring, and then living life on your terms. But even if you save enough, life will NEVER be on YOUR terms. They see to that. If you succeed (and few do) they just change the rules on you.
Life is rigged. All you can do is numb the pain the best you can while trying to keep breathing for as long as you can. Sorry if that sounds bleak.
If I have to answer another question from a penis-brained man, I might as well stay rich and miserable. Being happy while surrounded by your stinking, testosterone-fueled stupidity is a special kind of hell, so give me my gold and my screaming headaches, just keep your drooling maw shut.

Poor and happy, though I'm not sure how anyone is rich and unhappy.
If I was rich I'd be very happy.
Being happy is always the better option.
I say rich and unhappy. If I was rich I could work on the happy part.
Honestly? If someone was poor and happy the world would make sure they become unhappy.
Sad fact of life.
Neither. Rich and happy is the best option.
It's better to be happy.
better for you? or better for me?
Poor and happy.
