Freckles have long been treated as something ugly, something 'dirty' on the skin.
It usually meant you're a farmer - which used to be a 'lower class citizen'... You've exposed your skin too much to the sun...

The latter is true. Freckles form when your skin gets more exposure to direct sunlight. So you can imagine why they fade during winter and re-appear during Summertime.

Soooooo...the actual question answered:
Freckles form from the cells called melanocytes which have increased levels of melanin (hence their name). When the sun hits them for a prolonged period of time they appear to the naked eye on your face, shoulders, arms, back, etc...

They serve to protect you from the sun! Imagine that!
Buuuuut - don't forego the sunscreen just because you have freckles - having freckles usually means your skin is more sensitive to the effects of the sun...so keep your freckles close, but your sunscreen even closer!
