Willow from Buffy was an early hipster?

I started watching Buffy again around Christmas, its been around 15 years since i last watched it through.

One of the things that has caught my eye is how much Willow stands out (and not just because i had a big crush on her back then). With maybe the exception of Buffy and Giles (who does his own thing any way) in most episodes, Willows choice of clothing looks pretty in touch and not dated in majority of episodes, yet pretty much everyone else by today's eyes looks pretty dated and i really see no resurrection for those fashion choices any time soon.


Willow tends to wear clothing from a trendy 1960/70s style which would mean we would be looking at what people wore in the mid 90s if we were to compare the time scale with today. I sadly can't recall how i felt about Willows choice of clothing back in the 90s so i can't quite give a good comparison, but it is noted by Cordelia quite early on how old and out of touch her clothes are.

I read that the term hipster started being used in its current form (Wiki) in the 90s,would she have been referred to as a Hipster then? She tries to do her own thing, is different and wouldn't identify as a hipster, very much like my self, i want to be my own person and by that definition i accept i probably am a hipster myself. If i was a girl i would probably dress how she dresses, she looks fricken cool!

Whats other peoples takes on Willow or other characters? is it just a coincidence based on when i decided to rewatch that what she wears a lot is "in" at the moment and if i watched in 20 years i would think she looked well off.

Buffy and Giles are also interesting, Giles changes his look over the series, but still seems pretty on point. Buffy comes and goes in each episode with her looks, but she has a sort of timeless "generic" look with the jeans, top and jacket ...Xander just looks a mess and Cordelia is a victim of the times fashion...Spike and Angel never change so i tend to look at the extras to see how they dress.
