Why being a model is bad

1. The way we are treated

Models are literally looked upon like the lowest form of human. We were just “hangers” for the clothes. If you wanna be a model you have to have thick skin because you will get treated like you are nothing more than a piece of dirt on the ground. You will get things pointed out like spots or your nose could be slightly bent and you didn’t even know. Almost everyday I somehow managed to gain a new insecurity. I remember one time my agency calling me to do a gig for a nightclub and when I asked what it was for they told me it was to attract rich men to want to go in. I was tempted to say “I’m not going to satisfy someone’s sexual desires.”They never normally tell you what it’s actually for so I was lucky as many of my modelling friends have had this happen to them. We are not dirt and so should not be thrown around, stepped on or treated like we are.

2. Unachievable requirements

35,25,35 Just typing these numbers makes me angry. These are the measurements you have to require to be a model and they are seen as the “perfect” body a model should have. 35 being your boobs, 25 is your waist and 35 for your hips. This ratio is the measurements every model tries hard to reach and wishes they had. This is mainly because the most successful models in any modelling agency have almost exactly these measurements. If you wanna be successful you have to have 35, 25, 35. I quit modelling for a number of reasons. However, when I did modelling I used to get so annoyed I didn’t have these measurements even if I was a couple inches off but you can’t loose inches off of bones. This lead to almost all of my friends who did modelling getting eating disorders and some even doing cocaine to get thin. The agency I worked for even recommended plastic surgery to a lot of the models. Models also have an expiration date and once you get to about 25-30 you retire.

3. The people you have to work with.

You’ll get the photographers at some shoots and they are just weirdos. They are so creepy and they are also really common. I hated it, they’d say some things they’d never get away with if it was out in public and they used to make me really uncomfortable. Sometimes, no word of a lie, you will get assigned for a fashion shoot and they’ll try and change it into something you didn’t turn up for (e.g a nude shoot.) I was once working on a fashion shoot set and a young girl came in, 14, she was so sweet and when she came back out they had caked her in makeup and made her pose quite “adult-like” and it just made me sad. There are also a lot of sexual abuse stories I’ve heard luckily it had never happened to me. Some will normally make you wear practically nothing on days where it is freezing and get you to do uncomfortable positions for long periods of time. And some photographers (at runway events or any other public event) just want to try and get a bad photo of you. My friend was getting changed once for a runway and there was a dodgy looking guy trying to sneak in photos of her. Not okay.

They are just a few reasons I could think of off the top of my head. But there are obviously many more and that is why you should never be a model.
