Many of you may have heard this term for the first time, but the pressure created by the insecurities and beauty perceptions we experience due to social media is now taking a huge part of our lives. Snapchat Dysmorphia is a psychological condition that occurs with the widespread use of social media and affects people of almost all ages and genders. This is based on the fact that people want to change themselves according to social media filters and achieve this in real life with exaggerated make-up or plastic surgery. Especially with the popularity of applications such as Snapchat and Instagram, people began to feel more "beautiful" by changing their facial features and skin tones through filters.
The basis for this is that in today's digital world, people's perception of reality can easily be distorted. People constantly find comparing themselves to people they consider "perfect" and feel incomplete or inadequate. When we meet someone new, the next thing we usually do is check out their social media accounts. That’s why we are trying to hide our flaws in different ways. We don’t share our posts without making our face smooth with filters and without photoshop our bodies. If we have enough money, we undergo countless plastic surgeries to make this perfection a little more real, even in our genitals! However, what is forgotten in this process is how far the perfect physiques and perfect faces are from reality. Of course, you should live as what you like, but you should do it for yourself; not by comparing to someone else or an app filter.
I know that why you don’t find yourself is beautiful enough, is not just because of social media. You want to seem attractive and visible enough for people you love. But the truth is, if they really care about you, it is not because of your physical appeareance. It is because of you being you 😊 We are all different from each other and we are more beautiful with our differences. Imagine if every person you met was almost the same type and had the same physical features, would that seem attractive or truly beautiful to you?
