Whats the appeal of expensive purses? Do people care about the statues symbols of them that much?

For me, I don't like things that look cheap... really simple. I've tried to find bags that were cheaper and sorry, they look cheaper too. Yes, I have a few designer bags, same with my shoes. I have more heels than I need probably and they are all costly. But I also have a nice home and a nice car... and more importantly my child is well taken care of. Here is my theory, if you work hard u should be able to spend money on whatever u please as long as you can still save money and take care of your bills. It isn't a status thing for me.. its a , I don't like cheap looking things. Another rule of thumb for me, you won't see me with labels plastered all over. of the 2 Louis Vuitton bags I own, neither are with the LV all over them. I will not advertise for your brand for free! This goes for everything else I own too, no free marketing.
What’s the max you ever spent on a single purse?
It’s one of those “If you have to ask, you would never understand” things! First off, I do kinda agree with you. $1,500 and WAY MORE is a ridiculous amount to spend on a purse. But it’s like how you guys can get away with owning TWO pair of shoes, a dress pair, and a pair of sneakers. Whereas we need different colors to match our outfits and different styles, and different colors in those different styles. Y’all like it when we look amazing for you, but you don’t realize what all goes into looking amazing! Wearing the exact right shoes for that outfit is just one thing that goes into it, and carrying a purse that also matches the outfit is another! We definitely need multiple purses to match our different outfits, styles, and color schemes, and designer purses are just better quality. I’m not saying that ALL purses should be designer, but certainly to have ONE basic designer purse that is so well made, it will last for years is nice to have!
@GnatSocks LOL 😂. Good one! Obviously you’re joking, because Tomboys are prepubescent girls. You should just look for someone like me (although not actually me) someone who pays for her own clothes, shoes, and purses? But if this is what you really want, just give me your girlfriends email and I’ll be happy to let her know that you don’t want her dressing up, and that she can just be comfy when going out w/you. Forget the makeup, wear sweatpants and an old T-shirt, and just throw her tampons and other feminine products in an old plastic grocery bag! Good for you, your every woman’s dream!
Tomboys I know aren't like that, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't into the t-shirt sweatpants combo. The grocery bag may crinkle a bit much, but shit, throw some in my glovebox and we're good to go, but 100% on the no make up thing. I would rather see the pimples, eye bags, and blotchy skin that are hers than the painted face that isn't. Not every guy is into it, and it makes a girl feel like she has no control over if she's pretty (and honestly girls think they're ugly), but I like it.
@GnatSocks hey, to each his own sweetie… Good for you! I am more of a “girly girl“ I actually enjoy the whole make up, purses, shoes, dresses etc. But it’s really refreshing to hear about a guy who is into natural women without make up or fancy clothing.
There are sort of two overlapping reasons.
One is they care because their friends and social circle cares. They're surrounded by people who are ALSO impressed with that stuff so it gives them status.
the other is validation of taste. I remember being 13 and somewhat insecure. I couldn't just pick an outfit that I thought looked good. But if it had some cool brand written on it then it was like validation. So for women it's like "if the purse says LV all over it nobody can say it's ugly because it's an LC and everyone accepts their great". By contrast if you took the money went to a custom leather worker and had a one of a kind hand made bag made in better material and better workmanship people might not think it looked good.
of course I grew up and now can't stand visible branding. It's my damn clothes I don't want to be a billboard for someone else.
I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting something expensive for yourself.
Most of my clothes are pretty cheap and some of them are from highschool or from the 80s and before, hand me downs.
But I do own 3 very nice and expensive leather jackets, I don't need them but they are something I wanted. And I thought it was about time that I had something nice for myself that I earned rather then own a bunch of stuff that was handed down to me.
I don't think there's anything wrong with that.
were they in the 1000's of dollars though? cause the price on some of these purses are just... wowwww

Women generally carry a bag. If you’re a woman that cares about status and material things make you happy, you’re going to invest in an expensive bag.. how else is the world to know you’re an “expensive female”. Also, I’m sure the price tag influences the quality to some extent? Get what you pay for type of thing.
“Also, I’m sure the price tag influences the quality to some extent? “
Yeah but how much? $1000+? I think that’s ridiculous
Agreed. I don’t think it makes sense to pay that much but to some ladies it’s also about being a cool kid. The brand name makes them feel like they belong to an elite group of bag hags 💁♀️👜✨
It is about the character. It is about who you are and wanna be. If you wanna be successful in life you don't dress like a bum. If you wanna be a clown you don't dress like a mechanic. Lmao this is the issue with logical people. They are logical but not wise. 37 and you can't figure this out. Accepting all triggered comments.
stop the condescension. its just an honest question.
Clothes and how much you spend on them isn't what defines your character lololol
Does this mean if I put on. NASA jumpsuit I can be an astronaut?
Same thing with expensive clothes, jewelry, and cars. It's a status symbol.
If you have a Louis Vuitton purse, Gucci sunglasses, a ring for every finger, a closet full of designer clothes, and you drive a car that costs more than a decent home, it's a sign that you've "made it" in life.
I honestly think they are so dumb and a lot of women buy them who can’t afford them, sorry but if you are on food stamps why are you buying a Louis Vuitton? Women who buy them, it’s kinda a calling card they are really high maintenance or they want to be. I’ll buy name brand but I never buy what I can’t afford and I’ll never spend like 200 or more on them.
Well usually (but not always the case) expensive handbags or purses are better quality, so they last longer. In bags especially, you need good quality in my opinion if you want them for a long time. There’s also the appeal of designer logos because I guess it makes people look stylish, trendy and wealthy.
Good question. If I can be honest, my fiancée has two Louis Vuitton purses and a couple of others designer's purses (Gucci, Michael Kors) and they are indeed quality items and accessories. They are more like an accessory than a real utility, but the quality is there and they have all different compartments and stuff.
I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm bragging, but I'm just sharing my perspective on this since I have first person experience of this.
Me personally I never understood the purpose of purses. I like to be mobile and free. I avoid having to carry anything more than I need to. Unless it’s my gym bag or my mountain hiking bag, I don’t own much in terms of carrier holders.
I don’t get why I’d spend shits amount of money for a bag I know I’ll have to throw out eventually.
The material is better. Longer lasting. I wouldn't buy a Louis Vuitton though because they're overpriced. I would never spend that much on a purse. Mose I'd pay is 100-200 on Michael kors or Kate spade
does the status the purse brings you appeal to you too?
No I got by the design I like vs it's status. I tend to like kors design, quality, and price
*go..
It’s just a status symbol no different to having a flash car when a bog standard one will still successfully complete your journey
is this something you desire?
i dunno i think all these "status symbols" really do is tell people you have money to burn. makes them come across as snooty to anyone who can't afford them
Yeah, kinda like men and cars!
@CrazyGirl2 that too.
Exactly! I agree 100% Why would anyone buy a mid-engine Corvette, a Ferrari, or a Lamborghini when a Chevy Bolt, Chevy Volt, Toyota Prius, or a Hyundai “will complete your journey” just fine? Even if one can MORE than just afford the Corvette, Ferrari, or Lamborghini… but have cash ti spare? It’s just TOO much, it’s merely showing off!
@CrazyGirl2 well a Ferrari is tons of fun. A purse is a purse.
@Hshsbsb Yes… To you, a man. To me, a beautiful designer purse is tons of fun and a Ferrari is just a car. Face it men and women are just different we don’t like the same things, and given that I’m not a Golddigger I couldn’t give a crap whether my guy drives a Ferrari or a Ford. And since I’ve already gone on the record saying that a purse that cost $1,500 is ridiculous I think I’m pretty clear on the fact that I like a nice designer purse because of the high quality… not because of the name. Personally I would never spend more than $200 on a purse. If you can get a Ferrari for under $200… God bless you!
If you can find them second hand for a low enough price, they can be on sold for a lot more. They are basically a status symbol. You're buying brand recognition. No, they're not physically worth the money they're sold for but millions of people agree to buy them for astronomical prices and those same people and others admire those who possess them. It's all part of the human comedy of imaginary things.
I never understood it either. Prob cause im not a purse person. I just recently started carrying wallets. I always used my pants/jacket pockets for everything
It's not about the product. Ofc quality too a certain point but after that it is about who you are. You need a bag to fit the person you wanna be. You wanna be a bum or a boss?
@TrainingDay a wallet can do that. End of story
Some of those are really nicely made and quality products. They are a status symbol as well. It’s just a shame that people who can’t afford them buy them while on financial aid just because they want to play Keeping up with the Jones’s.
I like expensive purses cause if I have a high quality purse, it means everything in my life is high quality, I may not have a lot of possessions but the ones I have are all high value products.
I never understood it either. The crazy amounts people will spend on a handbag... Thinking designer labels gives them a better life 🤷🏼♀️
@exitseven there you go.. I'm really not a purse person myself
I my opinion luxury brands from an outside prospective, may seem ridiculous.
But when an accomplished person has disposal income, you're not think value for my money, sometimes you just want the best possible thing.
Think food. Basic sandwich vs eating out:)
I think it's just the name that it's written on the purse. To me buying an expensive purse makes no sense. I just want something that I can afford, that it's cute and where I take my belongings.
I think they're great. They help other people to identify the holder as someone soooo in love with themselves, with priorities really out of order. They're a good signal to avoid that person and their self obssseeing bull shit.
I don't use a purse what's the point I just throw everything in my truck & go. As for cash I very seldom carry any & my personal info is on me or in my phone ✌️
I only buy things with non identifyable manufacturers. I hate branding and will not pay more for a logo.
They are like expensive shoes -- they are just more carefully made from better material. Except that a cheap purse won't make your hand hurt.
Purses I don't understand purses as a straight man but hell my 2nd girlfriend had a Chanel Boy bag but she had a penchant for Chanel and had the means to fulfill it
Status is everything to some people, and if you walk around in expensive brand you'll be seen as more attractive because people associate the brands with money, so it says you've got money which for a lot of people, especially females.
Don't ask me, bro, I have a cheap backpack I carry around all the time lol.
I've been collecting luxury items for four years and I see them as pieces of art.
that's a good question. I dunno what peoples obsession with expensive fashion is but I think it's silly
I don't know... either someone has way too much money or a really fragile ego and buys this crap to feel important.
People care about weird things. I think shitty bags and Louis Vuitton are made by the same child slaves in India.
I certainly don't understand it; I could say the same of shoes and other such things as well.
Those girls want impress themselves.
Matters to women for some reason
LV vs my $5 bag
