Other kids would touch it without asking (sometimes yanking), some would straight up tell me it looked ugly right to my face, those "ugly duckling transformed" things in moves where they'd have a girl with curly hair get it straightened and now suddenly they're "pretty" didn't help, I couldn't wear it in styles I wanted to, I'd comb threw my hair trying to make it look straight but it ended up a frizzy mess and left it damaged.
I became more more secure in it when I started looking at videos to help fix damaged hair. I started surrounding myself with people who had the same hair type as me (Or a tad bit different) and it helped. I would definitely recommend doing that if you feel insecure.
