Is it offensive to tell people that they look British?

Question

No offence to the British, but I have heard its being used as an insult on many internet sites, especially on Reddit. Whenever they see a white dude with big nose and thin lips, majority of people just type "you look British". I also saw so many memes about how Brits look. I am confused and also, a bit curious to learn why the British are associated with looking unattractive. Aren't majority of the US citizens Anglo-American? White Americans don't look crazily different from them.

I feel like British and Europeans in general have a very distinctive look from Americans, actually. Like it’s more of a “pure” look. Like, they look more white if that makes sense. I think also southern American white people have a distinctive look.

I don’t think it’s necessarily offensive, just that you look extremely white. Your hair is also a popular style in the UK. I wish I could explain more what looking extremely white is but I can not.. I would not regard this as them necessarily saying you’re unattractive because in America UK is heavily romanticized.

As an American the "you look British" comment has more to do with looking unbothered and unimpressed with it all that and bad teeth but that's kind of an old out date stereotype. I think the majority of British men are tall, maybe not as solid as an American, and generally handsome. It's just that you say things that would get you beat up in most places of the world but never seem to get beat up for it. Your women are like 7s or 4's nothing in between

It definitely isn't a compliment. Brits are known to be rather ugly.

As an Irishman, I'd take great offense in being called British. It happened once and I told them off. Most people, though, always say "you look Irish" so it doesn't happen much. I'm typically Irish looking with reddish hair and blue eyes.
