Why do so many (especially young people) like wearing the 'colour' black?

I placed the word "colour" in inverted commas in my question, because black isn't technically a colour, but a lack of colour, an absence of light. Could this (disturbing, in my view) trend reflect the general direction the world is heading in? You know, into darkness?

Black clothing has its place and it does work and look great sometimes, but I get your drift. A lot of people nowadays wear more dark colored clothing and I think it tends to be linked to an idea that wearing brighter clothes is goofy, not very fashionable, or not the norm. I sometimes wear bright clothing myself and will get funny looks or giggly smiles from some people in public, although women from other countries tend to find me more attractive when I wear that.

You can see differences in cultures. Of course in the western world we wear darker colors for those reasons, but in other countries like Africa and Latin America they will wear more colorful clothes. Western cultures care more about what other people around them think and they want to fit in with what's popular, so if dark is in then that's what they follow.

I don't know.. I've been wondering the same thing. Maybe they feel they look older, more mature, professional or "put together" this way? Personally, I never wear black, as it doesn't suit my coloring at all and sucks every bit of life out of my life. I never saw the appeal of the "little black dress"; it looks rather bland and generic to me. I only own some black jeans and sweatpants, but never black shirts or jackets

My personal uniform is all black. It’s lightweight, looks tidy and is easy care thanks to being a poly-cotton blend. At the grocery store I’m often mistaken for an employee, and on a couple of occasions in other places, a minister. I’m more colourful than my wardrobe; nothing to be concerned about there.

Black color is versatile. People give me more positive reaction when I wear mostly black. It just can never go wrong. Ofcourse I think entire black outfit is too much, only some people can pull it off.
