Guy friend and I text every day for hours mainly just bantering about everything possible. We say things like- you're so funny, you're so smart, I love your sense of humor.
is that flirting?

Part of the point of flirting is that it's grey area. Maybe not fun, but i guess part of why it exists is you can stretch from being friendly to more without being obvious, which lets people back off without outright rejections.

The banter especially combined with the other comments could be very light flirting.
