How to talk to a hot guy at the gym?

There's this guy who goes to my gym. He's very attractive like out of my league hot. He's tall dark and handsome. He's usually with friends when I see him. But one time we actually made eye contact and we were smiling at eachother but it was from across the gym so I wasn't really for sure he was looking at me.. anyways how do I find out if he already has a girlfriend and how to I indicate that I'm interested

Make sure you make him feel happy. Either by simply smiling and looking at his eyes for a little longer then normal, or having a great conversation, or by complimenting him on something (sincerely)

Step 2:

Go talk to him when he's alone. For starting a topic, I would suggest athletic stuff since you both like getting fit. Once you start talking to him more, then ask more personal stuff. Like "what's your name" or "where you from"? When you talk to him even more, just go for it. If he has a girl, you can just move on. You'll never know until you try. Goodluck by the way!
