How do I ask for this girls number at my gym?

Hi, so i have had this gym crush for a while now, and im trying to work up my confidence to ask for her number, but I don't know how. Its a small gym so it seems crowded even if it's not. Sad to say but I'm used to get rejected, but this is new for me cause im scared of getting rejected infront of other people, specially infront of other guys for some reason. First time today i got to say hi to her, but only because she used a weight i needed. She walked past me some minutes later and i smiled at her, and she kinda smiled back? I don't know why it wasn't a proper smile, maybe she is shy, cause she always sticks around her girl friend. Also another thing is that im scared that she is too young for me, but i guess if she is, i won't be hurt if she rejects me cause of age haha. Anyway, any tips of what i can do?

Honestly, I wouldn’t go for it. Like @ ms_vanderquack said, there are two types of girls at the gym.
Ones that are focused on their workouts and pens that are there for attention. She is probably there to focus on her workouts and doesn’t want to be bothered. No one wants to be bothered while they’re working out. Let alone, most girls don’t wanna be approached by men if they are at the gym. Maybe one day you two will get to be talking if you keep running into each other. Just take it slow and see where it goes.

You don’t. There are two types of girls in the gym. The type who are there for attention, who aren’t worth your time. And they type who are there to work out, who don’t want to be bothered. If you do, and she turns you down, it will be super awkward every time she sees you in there. Just let her do her thing, and do yours. If you happen to strike up a friendly conversation and build up a rapport that’s different.

I think the smile was just being polite? Also you should try to talk with her more before asking for her number, maybe on the cardio machines or stretching (if she does any of those 2). Could be difficult because of her friend.
