Girl acting weird from a compliment?

It wasn't anything overly suggestive or anything, and I consider us friends because we joke around and stuff.

But she was dressed very professionally today for some interviews around campus and when I saw her I said "wow look at you! you look very professional, you look great."

And she seemed weird and said that everyone was dressed this way for the interviews and it was no big deal.

The only history we have together is that a while back she had a crush on me and I sort of indirectly and implicitly rejected her, she disappeared for a while, and now she's hanging around again and we seem to be friends getting along okay. Why does she not take a compliment, can't friends compliment each other?

You guys are not friends. If she had a crush on you and you "sort of" rejected you, hey, she may be able to be around you in a reasonably polite manner or act like nothing is bothering her, but it's bothering her.

It is actually pretty amazing how far we can go to act like we are fine when we are not. She may be angry with you. She may think you are a jerk who let her get away and she is waiting for an opportunity to stick it to you. Or, she may have felt your comment was condescending, like something you would say to an unattractive girl to look nice. Just sayin...

ive done that before with a guy I like, I try not to make a big deal out of it either out of shyness or embarassment

I don't think she sees you as just a friend. She still has feelings for you and your compliment caught her off-guard.
