Grocery Shopping During the Corona Virus Apocalypse

Grocery Shopping During the Corona Virus Apocalypse

To put this into perspective, I have gone shopping on Black Friday, Christmas Eve, during hurricanes, and for the holidays, and I have never seen the grocery store I go to with a packed parking lot at 9 am in the morning nor as empty as the shelves were. IT WAS NUTS!

When I entered the store, people were moving with a frenzied pace stacking their baskets high with literally anything they could grab. There was absolutely nothing on the pasta aisle, no toilet paper, no peanut butter or jam, there were few bottled drinks left, no water, chicken was gone (though hilariously, pork and beef were still well stocked), there were no vitamins or pain killers, no cleansers or sanitizing products, there were signs from the pharmacy about lack of items, flour and oil were all gone, no potatoes or onions, and there were barely any canned food items, and no dried items left like instant soup. I was in shock.

Like I knew people were kind of getting a bit insane, but to actually join the fray and see the looks of fear on people's faces racing about, I'm not going to lie, it kind of got to me because not only did I not want to be in this packed store shoulder to shoulder with people who STILL refuse to cover their mouths when they cough, but knowing so many major events and activities have been cancelled including schools for the next three weeks, there really is no knowing when these items would be back in stock because for the past two weeks, there have been no toilet paper and no water to speak of and they can't tell you when they'll have stock.

So I too began to stack my cart. You can roll your eyes all you want, but my mission became, I don't want to have to come back to this store for like another month because this is too insane for me. I got what I needed as well as some stuff for my parents because I didn't want them to be in that mess. Stocked up. Checked out, and then I began the hunt to find toilet paper which I actually did need. It took me four stores before I finally found some at a dollar store and there were only 2 left, but I left one for whomever would undoubtedly come after me to get it.

You don't want to buy into this panic, literally and figuratively, but you also have to look out for yourself and your own families needs in all of this uncertainty. It's the same with what we deal with during our hurricane season here. You see the people who wait until the last minute and they get screwed because everything is gone by the time they roll up expecting the stores to still be stocked, and then the power goes out and the grocery stores have to shut down and then what? Thankfully I work from home and for my own business, I can do a fair amount of it from home as well, so just trying to sit back now and hope that all this shut down and cancelling of events leads us to a place where in a few months, if that sounds too optimistic, we can get back to living life again.
