Kholland, you need to try to understand this better. When you are a female and are hated on simply for being female and wanting people to acknowledge that men and women are equal but different, then you will understand. I'm not complaining to complain here; it's hard to ignore the widespread misogyny in the U.S., especially on the Internet. Girls Gone Wild and Creepshots on Reddit anyone? These guys get off on exploiting women, because women who voluntarily give it up are "boring."
It's all about the equality. :) I suppose we all approach it differently, but I support men's rights (like the child custody stuff, not the entitlement to an underaged subservient wife MRA stuff), gay rights, rights of other races, etc. We aren't a post-sexist/racist/homophobic society yet, sadly.
The laws often don't protect women from male stalkers like ex-boyfriends and strangers. link If he walks outside her house, the cops can't do anything. It's not fair. Restraining orders are useless, and often anger the stalker, so the woman is more likely to be in danger if she files one.
diegoD, then why would I get blamed if I got raped by someone I knew? Why do women get accused of lying whenever a boyfriend beats them or calls them horrible things? When proven, why do people say the woman deserved it? There is misogyny in this country based on how we carry out the law, not in the laws themselves. This is a matter of de facto, not de jure.
Dudebrodude: Again, if most women were strong enough for it, and the military itself wasn't so hostile toward women, then it wouldn't be an issue. I feel that biological differences are important to consider and may limit what men and women can do (within reason, as combat/physical capability seems to be the main difference, as there are female scientists, doctors, etc.), but sadly a lot of people use that difference as a justification to say women are inferior beings in terms of worth.
Also, I should mention that the military is a very patriarchal system, like a "good ol' boys" club, hence the prevalence of rape and sexual harassment toward females. The rules are different, and we can't expect an "egalitarian" military population when they system is hostile to women as is. We have both the physical weakness and an extra orifice to rape...
Here it is: link
"Infantry troops routinely carry backpacks with 60 or 70 pounds of gear, or even more. The most common injury in Afghanistan is caused by roadside bombs. This raises the question of whether a female combat soldier would be able to carry a 200-pound male colleague who has been wounded."
There's probably a very tiny percentage of women who would meet the physical standards that men have to face. Then, it would be fair (assuming she doesn't have a baby who needs her to breastfeed or significant female health issues that would bring her unnecessary pain when she should be focusing on fighting).
As for occupational neutrality, I believe everyone should be allowed to do anything IF they have the skills needed to perform. No women in this one study I heard on NPR could meet the physical standards to be in an elite squad in the army. Having most women fight in combat anyway, (even if they are strong *for women*) is wrong because they are highly likely to still be sucky compared to the men. It's wrong to lower the standards and throw in a few weaklings like me in for "equality."
DiegoD, if you paid a little more attention to the messages sent in our culture and media, you would see that America is not as feminist as it should be. It's mostly a man's world, where things geared toward men are "gender-neutral" while things that have some women as an audience are "for girls, ewww!" Like here: link
Birth control pills are often used for health reasons. I take it not because of sex, but because my quality of life is better with it (you try having migraines, horrible cramps, and explosive mood swings every month). Denying a woman the pill for that -is- misogyny.
I don't ignore what's out there in other countries, but sadly there's nothing I can really do about what goes on there other than spread awareness.
We need to stop teaching girls to tolerate such behavior stemming from those concepts, and teach boys that those concepts are wrong. It's a matter of achieving peace through correcting dysfunction. Hate is dysfunction. Some people will always choose the dysfunctional beliefs, but education is key.
So, fighting for the right to vote/wear what we want/own property, get equal respect (based on merit, not gender), and the acknowledgment of what rape really is, as well as the right to have opportunities (again, based on merit) to work our butts off in school and our careers is a bunch of "unequal rights?" Riiiight.
NEXT.
Ludorock, you are so right. However, there are some women out there (and men!) who believe in equality yet will not identify as feminist, which is their choice, but I want to help educate people about what feminism is before they make that choice, as I feel that way too many people think we are all militant, cold women trying to be men.
I love how some guys are like "I don't tell you to go in the kitchen and make a sandwich/I don't rape/you have birth control even though you 'should' have kids, thus I am 'special'/you should be grateful to all the menz for your rights." Nope, my rights are my rights, not some "privilege" that men granted me. Also, not withholding rights and not violating people doesn't make you special, it means you're simply being a decent human being, which -should- be expected from everyone.
I choose not to have children. I have crappy genes that would be cruel to pass onto a child. It's not my responsibility simply because I have a crappy biological system. I want to get my tubes tied and donate money/volunteer to help the millions of children popped out by women who are at a disadvantage due to poverty or messed-up governments. You're not obligated to procreat either, just to be productive and do good in this world, given you are mentally/physically capable.
I never suggested breaking the law. The rules are often broken when sexism occurs, such as the military sexual harassment scandal right now. We need better enforcement if said laws, because their is an underlying societal belief in America that women are minorities less worthy of respect. Those women don't deserve to be harassed and raped by -their own fellow soldiers/authorities- simply because they wish to do good and serve their country.
So, if men "let" a woman get a college education (paid with her own money) and work her butt off, doing amazingly well in her career (and thus she wants respect) she is stealing from/exploiting men? Am I supposed to thank you for "letting" me achieve what I have achieved on my own?
LOL women do abuse, I have never denied that. I have told plenty of guys on this site to dump useless women who were playing them. Again, you're twisting what I said because you seem butthurt. Also, how is feminism -not- political, e.g. the woman's suffrage movement?
Also this link and this link are good.
