Don't make it a rule because one of these times you won't go in order and one of you might freak out. This is one of those times where I wish texting wasn't invented because some people base lots of things on whether someone texts or not. It's really frustrating.
I think it's a good idea for you to be the one who initiates now and then so he doesn't get the feeling you're not interested. Just don't turn it into some kind of rule that you won't text him unless he's texted first on some days or something like that.
Yeah, text him, otherwise he might not think you're interested. I know this from experience!
