I attended the miserably failing Detroit public schools and had I only that I'd probably not have the English language aptitude I have. I'd be speaking much more in the Ebonics of the hood. But my mother graduated from Grambling with a Bachelor's and my eldest sister graduated from Michigan State. So at home I was blessed with educated mentors. Unfortunately it wasn't enough for me to feel confident in competition for a spot at a university. Some just aren't meant for higher education.

Education is unimportant here, the schools are broken and refuse to fail anyone because the logging mills and the coal mine need their constant stream of new employees, I know people who skipped half the year and passed because the teachers bumped their grades up so that they wouldn't be help back. I always enjoyed reading though so I learned English through books initially, and whenever I would come across a new word I would just google it to find out what it meant. Anyone can have good English as long as they have a willingness/desire to learn and access to books written in English. Unless you consider books a blessing then we started in roughly the same boat. To be fair, I think I have the intelligence for university, but I lack the motivation and decisiveness, I second guess myself a lot on what I would want to major in, but I know that if I go to university I want to study psychology, just because of my history with depression. Kinda random, but I just thought I'd throw that out there lol.
You could still do post secondary schooling though, and probably even university. Not all universities are so competitive, and as long as you have an interest in the subject, ambition, and a desire to learn more, I think it is possible.

I play in a piano bar at a downtown hotel in Detroit.
I also play with an R&B cover band doing 60s and 70s music, though we've only played a couple block partys and one music festival this year.
The piano bar I only get the early evening hours as it becomes more of a nightclub than a restaurant at 9pm. I'm not 21 yet so they've another pianist works nights. He gets the crowd that tips big. But to work there you have to be able to play requests, I enjoy the challenge posed there.
I dont understand the job much as I've never worked anything like that and I dont play any instruments, but I used to get tips at my old job and I miss that a lot lol.
