Why don't girls seem to understand, that if you are chatting with them, and they don't show an interest in you at some point, that you will give up?

This is really confusing to me. If I am chatting with a girl, and it's a good conversation, I try to say things that make her feel that I like her and want to get to know her better and talk with her again. But so many times, they don't say anything to me that indicates they feel that way.

Then, after a while, it makes no sense to me to continue contact with them because what's the point of endless chat with nowhere to go? I mean we're not 12. We are adults. So I just gently stop sending messages and disappear. It doesn't feel like ghosting because I never think she cared whether I left or not. She did nothing to indicate that it made any difference to her.

Then, some time later, I get another message asking why I left. Huh? This has happened more than once. Do girls not understand that a guy can't go on forever without any encouragement? I mean I am willing to be very patient. But it's not like I am asking for much. I would just like to know when she is interested so I don't feel like I am wasting my time!
