My kids go bathroom outside by sitting down directly on the ground - Really so weird or a usable way to go?

Hi community. Just wanna ask you all something because we've already had a lot of discussions with our acquaintances because of this. Sorry for possibly bad English, it's not my native lang.
We have 3 kids aged 8, almost 7 and 4yr. We often go out for hikes and camping in the nature. So of course they need to go bathroom outside here and there. At first we handled this with our eldest daughter by lifting her up in a squatting position. It wasn't optimal because she often soaked her pants, legs or shoes by getting held like this. We also tried to teach her to squat but it ended in the same results.
But we weren't always around her to help so she learned to pee and #2 outside by sitting down with her bottom directly on the ground and it works like a charm. She never wet her clothes again and managed it independently 👍.
So we taught our other kids the same way and they are really fine with it and do it stil this way everytime we're outside.
But every time we are out with acquaintances, they tell us that it's totally weird and what kind of parents we would be to allow our kids to do something like that although I often see several kids (girls) doing it this way a bit off the playground too when we're there. It seems to be certainly common at kids and I don't see a problem in there. I did it the same way for years when I was a kid. And neither for me nor for our kids has this ever been a problem. On the contrary, our middle child is a boy and we told him once that he could handle his bathroom needs easier than sitting down outside, but he doesn't want to. He still sits down like his sisters when he needs to "go" outside. "It's more relaxing" he says. Likewise our girls. They expressly don't want to do it any other way. They're totally fine with it.

So what do you think? Is it really so weird and uncommon?
