Friends who make you look bad in front of the opposite sex?

Is this an intentional thing? My friend made a very embarrassing comment about my appearance in front of a guy she likes as a joke the other day, and even he picked up on it and said "why you being rude to your poor friend." She denied being rude and said she was joking, but why do friends do this? Is it normal? I see it a lot between girls for some reason. They embarrass each other in front of guys.

This is a great question. I think that it's more intentional than accidental. They don't want you to succeed with members of the opposite sex that they find desirable.

They are afraid of the competition so they try to make the competition look bad so they will look more appealing.
