What does it mean when a guy says 'sweet dreams'?

a guy friend of mine was texting the other night. then I told him I am going to bed early tonight (as a good news) he texted me back saying "sweet dreams".

do guys usually use this line? if they do when would they use it? doe this mean he likes me?

my dear I study Linguistics and cognitive science,the choice of words one uses it reflects on what they are thinking. so I'm getting the opinion of guys to see why THEY would normally use it not girls.

I say sweet dreams to guys and girls all the time out of habit, and so do my guy friends and they mean nothing. It depends on culture, and whether he does it normally. If you are the only one he does it to, then you're special. If he says it to everyone, it might be just out of habit.

Most of my friends are guys, only have like 4 girl friends, the rest are men.

it's normal for a woman to say this because they are affectionate ppl, but for guys they would normally use more rough words.

he could use "good night" instead of "sweet dreams". do you think it means something?

It depends on the guy, some guys aren't as rough as you'd think. Most "look" rough, but really aren't. The thing about my guy friends is that they like looking rough and talking rough around men, not women, they filter their words around women. Some even tell me, I hope you have a good day etc etc. You see, it just depends whether a man is shy or not, or if he gets really close to women fast or very slow. If they normally do it with women, then that means nothing, or vise versa.

I mean, you're not gonna see a man say to a man, "sweet dreams", he'll prob respond with fck off or wth is wrong with you, Men know women are more sensitive, and most don't speak as rough, so they do filter it, unless they know you a lot and you're more of a buddy (me). If they are the shy, introverted kinda men, who can't trust women easily or have a hard time with it, then you're special. It's more about body language, you can tell whether he likes you if he notices you a lot, etc etc
