Why is my friend making stabbing remarks about my weight?

I am a normal BMI and I am a healthy weight. I’ve always been told I am slim and look athletic and fit. I workout every day and eat well and I am generally happy with my body.

My friend has anorexia and has suffered with an eating disorder her whole life. When I last met up with her she was pressurising me to join a ballet class with her but I didn’t want to because ballet isn’t really my thing. She said ‘don’t worry about being too big for ballet there are all shapes and sizes in that class’. Then we both went out shopping together and she gave me a backhanded compliment. She pointed out a shirt to me and said ‘this would really suit you because it’s long and baggy so it would flatter your figure’

Then I saw a sports bra I really liked the look of in the shop and she kept convincing me not to buy it, saying ‘hmm are you sure you can afford that? Even though I’m working and she’s still a student. She then bought herself a £100 pair of leggings from the shop and said ‘it’s a shame we both don’t make enough money to be able to afford nice expensive clothes’, even though I’m in a high paid job.

Why is she making cutting remarks about my size?
