Well this is assuming a woman will be willing to date a much shorter guy to begin with. It’s not fair at all to short guys given they genetically got the short end of the stick (no pun intended).
But anyway in my experience short guys tend to be more smart, funny and feisty. They win over women with personality and once they are “in” they do well.
However I wish women would stop openly judging short men. I’ve seen countless women in person and in dating apps say “you must be at least 6ft”. I am 6ft but it is so shallow. At best a woman (of average height) should just want a man who is tall is her. But I am so sick of women judging men on things they have no control over and hypocritically telling men to judge them for things they CAN control (weight, fitness).
I think most girls want a guy who's at least three or four inches taller than they are. I don't think it's about defending them, although maybe they feel safer around taller guys? And girls want the guy to be taller even when they wear high heels.
Some girls will date shorter, but I think their preference is to date taller.
If you want to date a girl who's taller than you are, you should probably bring something to the table that makes them feel less awkward about it. Being a bodybuilder or a powerlifter or a skilled fighter MIGHT help.
As someone who is 183 cm (6 ft), no, I don't need "protection". From what? Where I live there's no crime, the local police station being empty most of the time because they've got nothing to do. But even if the world were a dangerous place to be, I'd refuse to live in fear.

I'm 5'10". I've dated 3 girls who were taller than me. None led to a serious relationship, but it was for other reasons not related to height.
In high school it was never a problem. Everyone in my high school knew I could fight due to me constantly retaliating against bullies.
The 2 I dated as an adult told me height was not an issue but that most guys they dated were the ones who felt insecure about their height.
During a date with one of those girls some jackass thought it was a good idea to try to snatch her purse. I returned it to her, but she said she was too scared to date me anymore after she saw how I handled the thief.
I don't think most six-feet or taller women would date a five-six or shorter man, partly because they may feel a shorter man doesn't offer a manly buffer from danger, but mostly because the larger ladies would probably feel strange with a little lad.
I would be much more concerned about fighting the 5' 5" guy than the 6' 6" girl.
Doesn't matter how tall a girl is to me, they don't feel like a physical challenge at any height.
I'm usually attracted to short women, but it seems like above average height women are attracted to me because almost all the girls I have had relationships with in my life were above average height.
I usually like thin women too, but one girl I dated was thick as a brick, only about an inch shorter than me and actually weighed more than I do! Even though she was almost my height and weighed more than I do, there is no way she could have physically intimidated me. Women are just not made for that.

Some of the most dangerous people in the world are short. Marines for example average around 5'6-5'7 lol. No woman worth dating cares about height. It is only women that are not worth dating that care
