Can you have a real friendship without trust?

My guy friend and I are arguing about whether you can be friends without trust. I say it's fundamental to any relationship. He says it's not essential. What do you think?

It just depends on your personal definition of "real" friendship. Personally, I have a hard time 100% trusting people, but I've had very good friends despite that.

No...maybe an acquaintance or something of the sort but not a REAL friend and a really good friendship...

Depends on what you want out of a friendship.

Absolutely not. If you can't trust someone, why would they be considered your friend? They just become a stranger who you happen to know their name.

I second this -- I don't have very many friends because I'm careful of whom I trust.. but apparently I'm everyone else's friend to them. Don't ask me how that works -- I'm upfront and honest to them lol but they still won't leave me alone.

I know what you mean. I learn the hard way that you can choose your friends and that you also should. That's why today I'm with people I have lots of fun with and I barely have a problem with anyone. And everyday week I meet people they know that are pretty awesome too. Everyone else I'm friendly with but have clear lines about how "friendly" I am.
