Nah. It's a show of strength. OKCupid did this study about on photos; men who face away from the camera and look moody are considered more attractive. I think this backs up my assertion that it is a show of strength.
What you want to do is strap your balls on tight, walk over there and talk to them. That is the OBVIOUS way to show your attention. Makes it easy for everybody.

If I smiled at a guy and he didn't smile back, not only would I consider him uninterested, I'd probably think that he down right just didn't like me at all for some reason. Either that, or that he's really shy and awkward. Body language also plays a part in that. Depends on the person, I'm pretty good at reading people most the time.
