What does it mean when a guy wishes you a Happy B-day via a private message on Facebook?

It was my birthday yesterdag and as you all know you get a lot of messages on your wall on Facebook. But there was this guy from my class who sent me a private message to congratulate me. And afterwards we talked for an hour or so. But my question is 'Why would he congratulate me in a private message instead of just posting on my wall?'. Ok I know that some people sent a private message because they know that person well. But the thing is, we never talk to each other, not even on school so I don't get why he would send me a private message. And, I almost forgot, I asked my friends who are also in the same class if they got a private message from him for their birthday, but they didn't. He didn't even congratulate them. So what do you think this means or do you think this means nothing?

This guy probably waited very long for a good moment to start a conversation with you. A Birthday is the perfect moment. I chose "definetly likes you" because he wouldn't chat with you for that long. If he is unexperienced with this, he will probably be like "No! I was just being nice!" because he doesn't know if you ask because you like him too or because you wanna make clear that You're not interested. Thats why you can't ask him if you want the true answer. If you like him too just tell him, because after that there is nothing for him to worry about.. yes guys are simple like that. He will be like "alright she said she likes me, I got that in the bag, so there Is nothing to lose. I can confirm, too". If you are shy as well. Then just wait if he starts conversations like this more frequently now. Or if he sends you SMS a lot. Then you know for sure he likes you. Give him time to grow the balls to tell you and if you see its already a month but its obvious that you both like eachother then just make the first step. Welcome.

I'm a shy guy. If he is a shy guy too, I think I can say that he may like you. Shy guys tend to want to talk with their crush, but feel too awkward in just saying "what's up?" Because of that, they may try and contact you with a reason and work into a conversation from there. In this case, a happy birthday may have been the reason, and the hour long conversation was him trying to talk to you.
For some reason, that ends up being my main way in texting/messaging a crush because I'm shy 😅

That being said, some people are just polite or simply interested in becoming better friends with people, so I wouldn't take it as a "definitely." However, this does provide strong evidence for a "maybe" or dare I say "probably." It depends how shy he is.

I think there are a lot of people who just aren't wall-writers. When I had a Facebook, I had female friends who did this too. They just wanted to make it personal and make sure I read it I guess. The fact he sent you a private personal message means something, and also the fact he doesn't wish anyone else a happy birthday means he did take notice of you and cared enough to say something. I wouldn't take this as anything other than good. You might notice that he's not much of a Facebooker, writing on walls or commenting, and if you do notice that, then it just proves my point that he would rather keep things private than do or say something that the world can see. Having a guy in your life like this ensures that what's between you two will stay between you two.

I've been thinking and I think he just likes me as a friend but I still don't get why he would send me a private message because we hardly say a word to each other :/

it probably means only one thing , but its one thing of about 4 or 5 reasons/motivation/self preservation.
He more than likely is saying he likes you , but why the privacy.
Private rejection is easier if the wishes brings that part of the possibility.
Not getting the girl in trouble with she has a boyfriend, so its kinds , but
Not getting himself in trouble , because he has a girlfriend

Oh god, I so do this. I used to go through a thread of 100 happy birthday messages on someone's wall just to make sure my wish was different. I'd end up writing this elaborate birthday greeting like something you'd read in a card. I'm a moron. LOL

Well, yes like a friend but since she already has friends I don't think it would be appropriate to talk to her. And You know, people get the wrong impression like he is getting attracted to her. Surely I am attracted but not that much that you call it love. Platonic love I think you can call it that. I joined the site recently to actually discuss this matter.
I wrote a letter addressed to her father asking permission because actually she wears spectacles and I wanted to see her without them. And she has never taken her glasses off her face at least I didn't notice.
And yes Tjanith is right. I do expect her to message me or talk to me sometimes but I thought if I asked first it would be indecent and like poking into her business. So I asked indirectly by asking her father. And send a sealed letter through her.
