What do guys think when they see a girl they don't know crying?

I've had a really bad week and today I just cried at school and my face was blotchy and my eyes were red. I knew it was noticeable and I tried to hold the tears back but they streamed down my face and clouded my vision. My friend was trying to whisper to me and calm me down and I took a deep breath and tried to suck it up. I saw this guy from across the room, kind of a long way across (we were in the band room) and I couldn't tell if he was looking at me or not. But I thought he was. And he smiled at me and I looked at him for a second and then looked away. I feel sort of bad that I didn't smile back; I probably had a dirty look on my face actually.. I don't know that he was for sure, but if he was looking at me, what was he thinking about? What do you guys think when they see a girl they don't know crying?

I'm sorry to hear you had a bad week, I hope the weekend shows some improvement!
Don't feel bad about not smiling back, I think that's the last thing he would expect if he knew you were upset lol. Guys can be a little oblivious to the little details of emotions, but they obviously know what sadness looks like.
If I saw a girl crying I would be sympathetic but I would assume, if I didn't know her well, she wouldn't want me to know she was crying or wouldn't want to talk to me about it. I think a smile would mean he was showing concern or a little empathy to your situation as well as telling you it's okay and he's not judging you
