What does it mean when a guy jokes about liking you and asking you on a date?

In class today this guy (who usually messes around) was randomly like ___(my name)__ you me after class today? And his friend was like "yea he's had a crush on you for more than a year now." Then he was like "yea that's true. wanna go on a date tonight?" And I only smiled because I'm pretty sure they're just joking, but is there any chance they're not?

If it's obvious he's kidding then yeah he's kidding. Or else he's trying to ask you out in a way that if he gets rejected, it wouldn't hit him hard. Just play it off too see what he says.
