What does it mean when your guy friend randomly stares at you and smiles?

This may seem like a high school question, sorry, I'm just curious. I've got a friend, our general platonic chemistry is amazing and I may sometimes sense signals of a potential crush from him. The main example is: imagine us hanging out with a few other friends. We're talking about something and with the corner of my eye I see him staring at me smiling. It's the kind of smile like when you find something interesting, if that's the adequate explanation. He does it quite often, especially after I say something he finds amusing. However he does it in such a manner that I ask myself could he maybe like me? Give me your opinions
