What does it mean if a guy starts to be touchy feely a lot? Can one person feel a spark while the other person doesn't?

My guy friend enjoys giving me fist bumps, high fives, the like, which I perceive is pretty basic friend to friend behavior. But then it seems like he tries to test the waters and tries to hold my hand for a few seconds. Today he came up from behind me and put his hand on my back, for which I jumped since I didn't know he was there, then proceeded to put his arm around me and tap my shoulder and say "I didn't mean to scare you". He enjoys sitting near me for things and throws my food away for me sometimes. He bought me a case of pop and candy, however he bought our mutual guy friend this as well. Whenever he touches me it feels as though there is a spark between us, however I am not sure if he feels the spark or not? I am unsure if one person can feel a spark when at the same time the other person does not feel a spark? He also talks to other girls when I am around so maybe I am just reading into things. Any help at all is much appreciated :) Thank you!

It is very common for one person to feel more than another. Two people will never be totally balanced. If you want to know if he feels a spark, look to see if he touches others the way he touches you. If this is just who he is, then his actions don't mean anything. If you get preferential treatment, then he has noticed you and is at least curious.

Sometimes people touch to see the other person's response. He may be looking to see if you are receptive. If you give no response or a vague general response, he may assume you aren't interested. By talking to other girls, he may not feel safe enough to focus the majority of his energy in one direction. The less he invests, the less it will hurt if he gets rejected.

If you want him to care, show him you notice him. Comment on things he says or does. Guys are less likely than girls to appreciate comments about their appearance. Ask him for help. Guys like to feel they have something of value to offer that is appreciated.

By him continuing to touch me more and more is he looking to see if I am receptive of it? It seems as though he started with fist bumps, then nudges, then trying to hold my hand, then putting his arm around my shoulder and now putting his hand on my back. Is he afraid that I am not into him and that I will reject him? He also says things like when a really attractive guy has a friendly conversation with us "He seems really nice" almost asking for a response in where I respond, "Yeah he seems nice but I think you are nicer" I mean I am fine validating him every once in awhile but I am so confused as to where our relationship is at this point.

He's fishing. Unless he gets some nibbles, he'll take his pole and head home (no sexual innuendos here). This is especially true for introverts or shy guys. If you want to let him know you are interested, initiate contact... don't just wait to respond to his initiations.
