Is It possible he asked me If I am dating anyone out of curiosity only?

He asked me If I was single or not. We are friends, but not close ones and we have not talked to for some time. He texted me asking how is my life, if my studies are going well... And then asked me If I am dating. When I told him I am not, he jokingly said that I am lying to him. I found It weird, but could this be out of curiosity?

He was probably thinking of you. Saying you're lying means he finds you attractive and assumes you would be dating.
