I, honestly, think the only difference is age. Aside from that, everyone has their own definition of what a "man" is vs. a "boy." With the exception of brain maturity and legality, everything else is socially motivated.

Where I am from those words usually pertains to: College as in studies, musical arts, differences in significant vs less important, and minor referring to age. I cannot recall seeing them in a legal aspect.

I have received comments from other individuals from different countries so I prefer not to assume. However, you are right. The dictionary clearly states "major" can be referred to an adult. I am not well-versed in legal terms so my apologies. Yet the question does call for the ability to distinguish between the two. So, if I might ask since you were able to provide me with "major" understanding, could you give me your perspective on this matter?

(Am I a boy or a man?) I was often asked this question. Yet, how would I ever determine when my father was that absent man? Responsibility shifted onto a child, because of his absence. How can I distinguish being treated as one, yet expected to be the other? Yet, who can say I am a man in a child's body? Treat me as a child, yet claim your raising a man. Lost by these terms, nevertheless life unfolds. Indecisiveness sinks in, another story unfolds. My opinion to distinguish the difference begins to be told.

My opinion for are you a boy vs a man is upbringing. I feel as if it is passed down from the man who gave life to you. Therefore his experiences and wisdom allow you to become catalytic. In having a father, it nullifies the role of you having to portray being a man, when your a child. This is assumptous by far yet is as aspect I feel. Distinguishing between the two... personally I would have to say maturity is the definitive answer to distinguishing between a boy and a man. This is subjective because environmental factors can participate in the interruption of raising a child. And yet, a father figure is not limited to blood related relationships. This is my view point on this topic. I would love to hear what you think about it.

To my blood family, I am just a boy. I am of course still in the state of development since I am just starting life but through all the shits I have lived through and suffering I think I will have a good future. Through physical abuse, mental games, and being emotionally manipulated I am still afraid of the world because of how it hurt me. The scars we hide tell us a story but only a part of it. Looking at the scars I have to remind myself that life is too short, and I am lucky that I fought, experienced, and learned because we only live once. Some people think being a man is just muscle, some think that the height, some think that is the physical strength, the testosterone, the body, the old saying that a man is stronger than a woman, or how much the man gets paid, etc. Everyone's definition of a man is different and mine is that a man is he is in tap with his emotional side and not afraid to show it, he's willing to sacrifice and fight everything for the people he cares about, he's going to do anything in his power to make sure his loved one is being taken care of, and I am hoping that I can become that kind of a man someday in the future.

And I agree with the concept, that this question has many different ideas, of what a man can be determined as. I can personally relate to the struggles of being born into the world, therefore have my own experience. Your thoughts are inspirational to the response of what the characteristics of a man was borderline nostalgic. As in, I too precieved the thoughts of a "good" or "great" man could be. Embracing your emotions and determining your identity, from hardships and experience could be the very definition of a "man". Which further lead me to lean on the idea of "maturity" being a factor. If you live by those morals, I believe you have the potential to be a great "father," "icon," or a "great leader," figuratively speaking. And lastly, who determines that you aren't already that man you foresee in the future? What you experience, could subjectively consider yourself that "man."

To myself, I don't myself that man yet because I am still in progress of maturity. Everything is possible because the future isn’t written in stone so the future can be anything. I can see a lot of those characteristics that I mentioned but I am still learning how to be a person in the functioning world because I’m just 19. Maturity comes differently to everyone so I think me learning early at least gives me some of a jump start. Life is like stepping stones so we can learn, experience, and live. One of the biggest determining factors in being a boy or man is knowledge and wisdom. It's possible to be in your 60's and still be a boy due to lack of both. It's also possible for a kid still in grade school to be more or a man then a 30 year old. Because his life experience has already given him more knowledge and wisdom then a 30 year old boy calling themselves a man.

My childhood very much forced me to grow up fast. In a lot of ways I was the man of the house and a father figure for my younger brother before I was in middle school. Also my grandfather was the closest thing to a father I had and he didn't treat me like a kid. Because he know I was too mature for that. So he passed down a lot of the knowledge and wisdom he gained over his lifetime. Due to that I became a man before middle school.

I really really enjoy this perspective as well. All these monumental opinions push me to my limits of understanding. Wisdom being passed down through generations or "acquired" by the individual can no doubtly be a factor in the difference between being a boy or a man. Yet, my only other concern with solely relying on wisdom to distinguish between being a boy or a man would be genetics disorders. These disorders potentially would make someone have an "inability" to learn or understand "wisdom. " They are still considered, individuals who can possibly distinguish between being a boy or a man. Being presumptuous in my statement they aren't necessarily using "wisdom" which could be a ludicrous statement, but potentially has some merit to it. Their process of understanding would have to be perceived from (completely hypothetical) their experience. And not "wisdom" alone. I didn't go so far to target specific genetic disorders due to this being opinionated and not factual, yet, I felt obligated to say. And I am not knowledgeable enough to delve into every genetic disorder but I can't negate the fact they exist. But what do I know, I'm just some guy sitting on my bed discussing the hypothetical meaning of questions.

A man assumes responsibility for the loved ones in his life and places their needs and desire on the same level as his own.
