Why did he wish me so late on my birthday?

My guy friend knew it was my birthday since morning but since I haven't been talking to him since the last 2 months, he didn't wish me immediately. It was like at 11:30 pm just before 12 that he wished me. Was he deliberating on whether or not he should do it? He wished me with hearts emoji.

He stares at me a lot (mostly when I'm not looking) and flirts with me a lot too, he gets jealous of my guy friends and if other guys flirt with me.

Maybe he had something to do later on, going to sleep or something. In my case I know birthday of my ex is very soon in couple of days I will contact her whishing all best but not at 00:00. Just for case that she don't overthink something that I'm thinking about her and waiting for 00:00 to be first or something.
