Why would my ex try to play games after over 2 years?

He texted me from a number I don't know, pretending it was for another girl who had text him earlier that day. He said he got her text but is using this phone now, and said he's good and asked how she was.

Why would he do this? I don't have his new number. Could it be a genuine mistake and somehow he text me, even though I've never spoken to him on his new phone, no contact for over 2 years? I accidentally called the number when saving it and hung up immediately, (was confused and wanted to save it in case it was someone I knew), and he drop called me a few hours later.

What does he want out of this?

It's just random. Why did he call me back at night and hang up? Maybe it was a genuine mistake
