Why does my crush ignore me, but his friends look at me and smirk?

So, I texted this guy from my uni. We talked from time to time during 2 months, he asked me a lot of questions and seemed interested. Whenever he would see me, he would instantly text me asking « u at school? » « I saw you » and all. One day, he was very rude and I have left him on read and it’s been a month, he doesn’t text me. We do not talk in person and whenever I’m around him, he seems lost. He often looks at me from distance, we had only like 2 memorable eye contacts. When he looks at me I see confusion in his eyes. Yesterday, my friends and I past by him and then stopped at a spot to chat. I could see him from where I was, but he decided to hide himself beside a tree (also big kek!!) and played with…leafs? His friends were observing me when he was hidden. So I suppose they were telling him if I’ve been looking at him or not. Today, same situation, but this time he wasn’t there. Two of his friends looked at me from a distance, they were smiling and smirking. I felt uncomfortable. Why do guys do that? I’m sure he told them about me, but I do not know if his intentions were bad or not. Were they…mocking me? Were they judging me? I’m lost.
