Do guys pull away after sex if they like a girl?

So I've been talking to this guy for almost a year. He seemed into me at first until I accused him of using me for sex, so he kinda pulled back and told me he had some things he needed to figure out in his life and that he couldn't give me what I wanted at that time. So we kept in touch ( been having sex). We stopped talking at one point and he popped back up and we started talking again and having sex I've told him before that I liked him but he would never respond back he'd just wouldn't respond and when he did he'd say I didn't know what to say. I know he was in engaged before and seemed to be very in love with the girl but they seemed to have been on and off in their 5 years together. He at times goes hot and cold with me and at times will only respond if I make contact first but usually he'll go a few days before responding but it wasn't like that at first. He seems to care and after sex he lays there and caresses etc. And we spend time talking. I'm just confused as to why he seems to pull away. He knows I care for him. Could he be scared to commit again or has he caught feelings and is just not sure about things?
