Guys, Confident in messages but awkward in person?

I've been talking to this guy on and off for a bit and I know he liked me. He even expressed how he thought I was playing with his feelings.

Every time I've been with him in person, he's been so awkward. To the point where I can't tell if he's really interested in me, if it's just his personality or if he really likes me.

Like he was so excited to have sex and he slapped my ass so lightly and awkwardly and I don't know the whole interaction was awkward. When I got out the car to meet him, He complemented me and asked how I've been.
