Why does he want to text me everyday?

I have a guy friend who says Im one of his favourite people to talk to and he sees us as a "friendship". He gets upset when I dont message him after a day. We talk daily.

He messaged me today and asked if I was ok because he hadn't heard from me in a day. I had work and was tired etc. He got worried he upset me. I reassured him he didn't.

He also wants me to go to him if I am ever upset and gets upset if I do not.

What does this mean?

He could be into you, but at the same time this is not granted, maybe he is just very clingy in general with anyone who just gives him attention and lets him be like that.

Anyway, is he upsetting you or not? You reassured him he doesn't, but I hardly believe that you don't get upset for reminders of missing duty to give him attention. If not now, you will get upset at some point I believe (I would be already now, I'm very allergic to any trace of neediness and expectations people create without my "consent" or participation, and spotting a single trace of that usually marks my "not looking back" departure from the bond).
Here his question was not just:"Are you upset?" but was like:"So can I continue being this needy and more?" and you said yes, so he will. Expect that. Be responsible for what you are letting him do, and what you are letting him expect and picture in his mind. By "doing nothing" you let him run with his mind, so you have to stop him if you feel discomfort.

Again, can't determine if he is into you or is just extremely needy (bigger chances are he is into you), but both cases, all it means is: he is very needy, more than you, and creates expectations you didn't set. He doesn't care about your side, he only needs and needs. He needs your attention and puts duties on you to keep fulfilling "otherwise" threats of upsetting him and making you feel guilty etc (this is passively aggressive anyway).
