Guy's Behavior

What does he want?

I have a ex from 6 years ago. He contacts me once every couple of months asking for favors or sex. I have said no consecutively but he continues to contact me. His words and actions do not align and i feel confused so i take it as a sign that he is not into me.

For example once he told me he did not like me, that i added no value to his life and to not contact him anymore. I complied and did not contact him. Instead he contacted me to tell me i was ugly. Then a few weeks later messaged me again to ask how I was doing because he cares about me. I asked if he was upset with me because i did not meet his need for support, he answered yes.

Now i have asked what he wants from me and he responded with anything can happen. I try not to listen literally to the words he tells me but to guess the feelings and needs behind what he says. But what would be the reason for him to continue contacting me if he doesn't make the effort to be consistent or have intentions of staying. I love him as a choice, regardless of what happens between us. But why keep bothering me, it seems like he does not like me. Why reach out to me?

Another question, could it be in some twisted way that he does want me but feels uneasy about forming a relastionship. I mean 6 years seems like a lot of time to string someone along if you're not even into them
