When you catch a guy lying why does he continue to lie?

Some people can't bear to be honest cause they think the honesty is too damaging to their reputation. I know more than one person that tried to ruin my reputation with lies but they told so many lies that nobody believed them any more and they continued to lie when they knew nobody believed their lies about me, cause they could not bear to be honest about the fact that their original statements about me were lies.

I'm not afraid to be honest, a person who was editing my resume told me to lie about the fact I got rejected by grad school after failing to learn a foreign language properly but I did not think I needed to lie about that since less than 10% of people would be able to learn a foreign language and become fluent as an adult, if it was a language that was more difficult then Japanese or Chinese for a newbie with no experience in the language. My friend said it was the most difficult language in the world to learn, and it's a dead language not spoken anymore.
