I saw him checking me out frequently from across the room and sometimes when I would walk past he would stare at me with big eyes and his lips slightly parted as if he was surprised. 2 times at the end of the semester he would nervously stare me down to get a reaction out of me which I ignored due to my own insecurities.
2 years later I saw him again and I overheard his friends saying something to him like „but you liked her …“ to which he would reply „yeah but that was ages ago..“. I noticed that he would dress more fashionably and try a new item every semester when he would notice a new pretty girl in the lecture he hasn’t even talked to. Apparently he went out of his way to purchase new clothes just for a girl he saw in a lecture that didn’t even notice him.
If he liked me, which he did according to his teasing friends, why did he not try to look appealing to me like he did to the other girls? Did he think I was not as attractive as they were? I used to have crushes on different guys but personally, as soon as I like someone looks don’t even matter so I would try to impress them regardless of their looks. Or was he ashamed to like me because I’m not popular so he didn’t even try? I always felt like he was in denial about his interest in me and tried to forget about me. What is so much better about the other girls? Why am I considered second class?

This is completely made up. There is no way you could know some of this information. You are also assuming a whole lot starting with him liking you in the first place. Staring at you doesn't mean he is interested.
His friend told him „but I thought you liked her“ to which he replied „yeah but that was years ago“.
But you don't know if they were talking about you or some other girl. You heard a small part of the conversation.
they were sitting directly behind me and watched me on several occasions
Sure thing.
could be he doesn't care about impressing u
Yeah but why if he used to have a crush on me? I other you like someone or you don’t
