He’s a senior lead tech (software engineer) that’s job title makes 200k.. he’s never shared his salary but any senior lead in a tech position makes bucks.

I don't know if he has a house or not

Not necessarily. I'm actually kind of similar and have had the same title in the past.

I spent a good chunk of my formative years grew up in a working class home with my single mother. So I developed very cheap tastes: microwave meals and Domino's pizza, not champagne and caviar.

I'm also a bit of a penny pincher. I like to save money and not spend much. I never know when someone I care about might be diagnosed with cancer, for example, so I always like to save almost half my money and only spend the other half. I don't see the point of driving the most expensive cars; that seems like a waste of money and I prefer to build up my reputation among friends through something a bit less materialistic.

I'm also someone who is a bizarre paradox in that I do love going away from my home on wild adventures, but at home in my everyday life I like to keep things extremely routine. So I don't keep up with the latest models of smartphones, for example, since it's disruptive to my whole routine. I don't like to go clothes shopping all the time since it's disruptive to my routine (I also like to wear the same 5-6 outfits all the time).

So he might just be like me that way. Sometimes people can earn a very decent salary and still have very modest tastes.

In any case, you might be able to find out more the next time by just asking you to show him your work. If he's truly a senior lead, he'd probably love to talk about his job and the product (s) he engineers, share photos of his development team, etc.

Oh, that's a shame. I would point that especially software devs aren't always the best at dressing up really nicely or high society stuff in general. John Carmack has a net worth of ~$50 million USD but he lives on Domino's pizza and diet Coke.

Maybe you can find out more about him in the future if you see him again. Sometimes we software devs also don't talk about our jobs very much since it tends to bore most people, like probably most women's idea of a fun dinner conversation isn't going to be data structures and algorithms.

It's possible he might have the papers and knowledge of this career but he's unemployed or self employed trying to be his own software engineer and when you work for yourself it's a slow process.

Sounds like one of those titles that can vary wildly in job description and pay. But in general it’s often the cheapest guys with the most money. Acting broke when you make good money is the best way to not be broke later
