Why would a guy avoid eye contact with a girl when she talks to him?

Guys, why would you avoid looking at a girl when she talks to you if you're normally good at holding eye contact with others (assuming you are on good terms with the girl already and she isn't someone you just met)?

Well for me, it is generally that I avoid eye contact when I have romantic feelings towards that person, but for some reasons I am unable to show it. That could mean that I am too nervous around her, that I am constantly thinking of how to keep the conversation going, that I have my mind on things I need to catch up on with my busy schedule, or that she is kinda too pretty and if I look at her I’ll start stumbling with my words and my throat will run dry really quickly. I have a crush on a uni classmate, but from what she told me, she is already in a relationship. Although it hurts, I decide not to act on those feelings just to keep on friendly terms and not ruin everything. Maybe in another universe we will be together 💔
