Does going to community college make me a loser?

Question

I didn't do so well in high school. I still could have gone to some universities that accept lower GPAs, but I really don't consider myself a guy that would enjoy the kind of life that comes with going to college either, so I stayed home and am attending community college. At least I am saving money but I am unsure how attending this school will affect my future, if at all.

It feels lame going to this school though, seeing everyone else I was friends with being at universities and having fun, and getting all of these great opportunities.

You might not be in the ideal environment you would like to be in, but you are in an environment where you are trying to better yourself for the real world. Granted you may not have done well in high school and as a result found yourself with limited options. You even admitted that you weren't so sure if you wanted life of a bigger college or university.

I think you need to consider this as a stepping stone, to prove you can handle the collegiate workload, being that community colleges offer similar curriculum and formats and to possibly set yourself up for continued studies at a bigger college or university once you complete your studies there.

Also, you need to take into account that wherever you go for education to better yourself and make yourself more marketable in the professional world, doesn't make you a loser. The loser is the one who is content with low end jobs with no sense of career orientation, meaning that the jobs are pretty much dead end with no room for growth and advancement.

You're going to school somewhere and that puts you ahead of those who are content with working at those work centers where you work today and get paid today. Minimum wage will not allow you to live comfortably or independently so I definitely think you're taking a step in the right direction. You just need to stick with it and make the most of it. The work might not be easy, but the rewards will be with you and will help you sustain a better quality of life.

Pros of a Community College:

Acceptance is guaranteed;

It's cheaper;

It's easier than a four-year school;

You can live at home -- both cheaper and a good option if you aren't ready to leave home yet;

Offers technical degrees and certificates not offered at universities; and

Credits will transfer to most state universities and many private colleges if you decide to go for a four-year degree.

I don't think you're a loser, you're getting an education. How could that make you a loser? Keep up the good work dude. And ignore the negative people around you and negative thoughts.

Nope, in fact it's sometimes the smarter option. I had a 4.0 GPA in high school but I still went to community college for the first two years because it was cheaper and closer to where I lived. I transferred to a university, and no one has looked down on me for going to community college or anything. And to be honest, university courses aren't that much harder, besides the obvious factor of me taking higher level courses now that I'm a junior. The basic courses have the same workloads and standards.

I'd like to be optimistic and say that potential employers will be smart enough to not believe the stereotypes, haha. I haven't had any trouble.

Not at all you are working towards improving your life and like others have mentioned educating yourself. How you go about that shouldn't matter in my opinion and anyone who really thinks like that needs to grow up and most likely has some issues they need to work out.

The common misconception about college is that people go to get a degree or to obtain the qualifications for a high-paying job. The reality for most people is that they go to college for the experience and to obtain the qualifications to do what they love (if a college degree is required). Whether that means an associates degree, a bachelors degree, a masters degree, a doctorate or no college, that's the goal. The few people that will think going to community college makes you a loser are shortsighted people.

Remember, there's a BIG difference between common sense and uncommon wisdom.

Not at all...I started off at ITT-Tech, and wish I did start at a community college...and was doing better than I could ever imaged and it is what gave me the confidence to try out a University. I was a 2.0 GPA student in high school, and after going to ITT-Tech for a year and making a 4.0 GPA, I gained confidence in myself and I am current going to the University of Arkansas at LR, Junior year and making a 3.4 GPA.

Hey, its a great testing the waters approach. If you do better in the community college than high school, then I know you can transfer to a Uni, you will surely do great there and be glad you made those confidence building steps.

Taking unenjoyable university classes just because everyone else is would be pointless. Further education requires knowledge, work, and passion. No amount of work will make up for inadequate knowledge and lack of passion. Go to community college. Take classes that you have a passion for. And take the most difficult courses you can find as long as you can be confident you can earn a B grade in them. Upon graduation take your knowledge, hard work and passion into the workplace.

Regarding university graduates: The so-called experts know more and more about less and less till they know absolutely everything about nothing.

Community college does not make you a loser, and it's a smart choice in many ways.  I didn't have the grades or cash to do the university thing outta high school so I did community college to get my grade up and save money for a university.  I now have Bach and a Masters degrees from good unis and am glad I did what I did.  Worked well for me.

Community or private makes no difference. I don't see any advantages in private colleges. You can get the same education in a community college as you can get in a private college. The onlh difference I see is in price. Why pay $50,000 per credit or whatever, when you can get the same education for $5,000? I go to a community college. I am definitely not a loser. My friend goes to another community college. He is definitely not a loser. Better than me.
