Breast Cancer Awareness Month. What do you think of the usual campaign?

I think we've all seen people sporting bracelets and bumper stickers that say shit like "I love boobies" and "save the tatas!"

What do you think of this tactic? I'm a little torn, on one hand I can't necessarily be against anything that brings attention to this and raises funds for awareness. On the other hand, I think it's incredibly sad that the sexualization of an ILLNESS is more useful than making it about the human being, and not her breasts.

As yaddayaddayadda mentioned, I don't really devote the energy anymore to analyzing things in society to this extent (not knocking you for doing it). I would make a strong guess that whoever came up with the whole "save the ta-tas" slogan was simply going for a funny, quirky take on breast cancer awareness and wasn't trying to mean anything ill-willed towards it.

I got pink bands on my braces this month because my orthodontist had a thing going this month where if you chose pink, they would donate money to the Susan Komen organization. Figured it was a harmless yet helpful way to contribute something, so yeah.

So I guess those are my (jumbled) thoughts lol... I just don't have the energy or patience anymore to find offense in the smallest of issues. Just don't G. A. F.

I think the shirts that say things like "let's save second base" are ridiculous but like you said if assholes are also raising money for cancer then let them fork their money over. I think there are much less asinine ways to do so though..

I've never really thought about Breast Cancer as a sexualized thing I guess. I have heard of the phrase "Save the Tata's" but I'm more about saving the person.

I'm all for raising money and awareness about this disease that affects so many women. I just wish that all the huge amount of money that goes to buying pink this and pink that, and t-shirts and hats, etc. went to basic biomedical research and toward clinical trials for new treatments. I think the breast cancer awareness industry has become just that --- a big business. I love football. During breast cancer awareness month almost all NFL players are wearing pink gloves, or shoes (yeah, really) or have pink sweat towels tucked in their pants. All that stuff costs money. All that money could be going toward research.

But I'm more concerned about where all this money goes. It seems like most of this money goes towards advertising, not research.

everyone knows about breast cancer by now and "awareness" feels unnecessary past this point. just give the money to the scientists and find your solutions.

Yeah that's kind of why I'm torn. It brings awareness to a good cause, but it's also just... kinda fucked up.

Is it worth wasting brain energy on, though? I'd much rather spend time watching a tree than trying to find offense in a breast cancer campaign. If you really want to get upset about something, get upset that komen only sends 20% of your donation to actual breast cancer research

Yeah I already knew that one. Totally shitty. I'm not upset by it for reasons stated above, I'm just curious what people think about the fact that sex sells better even when for a good cause. I waste my brain energy on much worse shit, trust me.

People don't give a shit about other people. Sex sells. If you actually care about breast cancer being eliminated, you should be thankful for it.

Then again, it's not like it can't be near-eliminated already, it's just that drug companies have demonstrably nefarious motives.

Its a discriminating and a shrewd PR stunt. Its one of the best ways to catch people's attention by mentioning or plastering boobies over their placards.

Personally, I see it as a better alternative than 2/3 of people not giving a f**k about breast cancer like the other 11 months of the year.

I can agree with that. What I'm wondering is if people think a less sexualized campaign would have been as effective.
