Before? I have no idea. I like the dentist.. they make my teeth look nice. (:
But during, if you have to do a filling just ask for a shot of lidocaine. Or if you can't remember that, just tell them you're sensitive and need more than just numbing gel. You won't feel ANYTHING, if they do that. And numbness goes away in like 4 hours and doesn't compromise your speech, but you won't want to eat anything during that time, considering you might bite your cheek since you can't feel it.
Beyond that, be vocal. For example, sometimes the dental assistant will pinch your lip against your tooth when holding the suction in your mouth which isn't agonizing pain, but particularly uncomfortable.. just raise your hand, tell them, and they'll be careful not to do it. They're not going to hurt you for speaking up; they're gonna sympathize and not want to hurt you any further.
Just remember they're humans who strive to help people. If you tell them they're hurting you, they'll quickly try to remedy it.

Ask them for anything that will ease you. Maybe some drugs, or something to numb you out. Then just listen to some music and try to just get lost in it and close your eyes.
I always listen to inspirational music before and during I ask for all drugs they're permitted and my insurance will cover lmao
